June 21, 2008 ~ Ms. Cane’s House

June 21, 2008. Demolition day. We arrived at Ms. Cane’s house ready to some damage. Ms. Cane’s house sustained severe roof damage during Katrina and it caused a lot of internal damage. The house also suffered from severe retrofitting: dropped ceilings, floor treatments, and wall paneling.
The Krewe split in to teams; Group 1 in the front and Group 2 in the rear. The plan was to start at the two ends of the house and work towards the middle. In each room we stripped wall paneling, quarter trim, the dropped ceilings, carpet, and the floor tile underneath the carpet. It was a lot of work but it was fun so we worked diligently to get it all done. And while it was a busy day we weren’t too busy to protect a small nest of baby mice found underneath the cabinetry in the kitchen. We put the nest in a plastic bowl under the house where the mother can easily find them.
Ms. Cane was so sweet to us and very knowledgeable about the town and her house’s history. She could also make a mean lunch, the food was great!
At the end of the day we were so proud that we accomplished a job well done we did a little victory dance in the yard, and the neighbor’s yard.
